You have edited the style.css in the templates folder wrongly.

You have edited the /*--- header ---*/ section of the style.css file that came with version 1.7 by replacing it with the style sheet of your old guestbook. This is not the right way to change it and can cause unpredictable results as you have now seen.

You should start with the style sheet that cam with version 1.7 and edit the styles in there (like you did with the /*--- body ---*/ section) till the guestbook is as how you want it to look.

I do not monitor the Gbook forums regularly anymore since I do not use the Gbook script myself anymore for a long time. But it helped me a lot in learning to understand php.
