in MfH 3.0.3 you added 3 more variables, ie:
$hesklang['you_have_x_messages']
and
$hesklang['message_lower_case']
$hesklang['messages_lower_case']
This is ok in English where the only string which can be singular or plural is "message(s)"
In Italian (and proably in other languages) also the adjective "new" can be singular or plural, ie "nuovo" (singular) and "nuovi" (plural) and also the verb must be conjugated differently depending on the number of message(s).
So, IMHO you shoud add another variable, something like:
$hesklang['you_have_1_message']
whose content could be the same of $hesklang['you_have_x_messages'] in English, but which can be used in other languages to match $hesklang['message_lower_case'].
In fact IMO there should be these 2 possible combinations:
$hesklang['you_have_1_message'] + $hesklang['message_lower_case'] => one message
and
$hesklang['you_have_x_messages'] + $hesklang['messages_lower_case'] => zero or > 1 message
