rich text editor stopped working in 3.4.2

Hesk was working great. However after a few days, the ability to use the rich text editor for ticket formatting for staff seems to have stopped working. I checked the settings and "rich text" is indeed turned on however the normal editor shows up within tickets. not sure if this is a result of updating my linux server (yum updates) which may have updated the php version as well. Any advise? thank you
